4/26-WHEN YOU RUSH THROUGH LIFE CHASING THE BIG STORIES YOU MISS THE JOY OF SMALL CHANGE!
What’s the origin of our
phrase “hoity-toity” meaning snobbish, luxiorious? It’s pure
French! It comes from “haut toit” (pronounced “OH Twah”) which means
“high roof” in French. How about “hoosegow” meaning “jail, prison”?
Pure Spanish. In Spanish, “juzgado” (pronounced “hoos-GAH-doh”, means
“judged”. If your friend is in the “hoosegow” it means he was
“convicted”, “judged”. Greatest one of all? “Copasetic” is thought
to be an African-American coinage. No way. It’s pure Hebrew!
(Over there it’s pronounced “KOL-be-SAY-der”) and it means everything’s
fine! Historian and folk-lore champion PROFESSOR ROBERT RODRIGUEZ visits
with Sara and Barry this evening for more of the same.
