Okay, so America didn't start at or near the top of
international espionage. Around the time
of World War I someone suggested that America should develop at least some kind
of intelligence service, since the rest of the world did had them and America
had absolutely nothing of the kind.
America's Secretary of War Henry Stimson recoiled in shock, angrily
replying, "Gentlemen do not read other people's mail!" Does this mean we must remain deliberately
and aggressively at the bottom? The lead
media story at the moment is the closure of our embassies and consulates in
almost two dozen Islamic countries this weekend because intelligence tells us
Al-Qaeda is planning a huge attack or series of attacks. Have our leaders never seen a B-movie
western? What a chance to deck the halls
with well-armed Marines, repel the attacks, interrogate the prisoners and
never, ever let THEM know that WE knew or how!
